Cortona

Contona is a wonderful Tuscan hill town about an hour and a half from Florence by train. Note that the train station is at the town of Camucia in the valley below Cortona – a bus takes you up into Cortona. As was the case for many cities in this part of Italy, it was originally settled by the Etruscans and later taken over by the Romans. We were there in early December, so Christmas season was well under way.

Many people recognize the town from the book and movie, Under The Tuscan Sun, set here. The author, Frances Mayes, and her husband still live outside town at their Villa Bramasole, note this is not the location used as Bramsole in the film. Every Thursday evening there is a community gathering with wine tasting and restaurant specials.

The University of Georgia also has a study abroad campus at the edge of town. Near the home of the popular Italian singer Jovanotti.

MAEC Museum

Cortona has a wonder museum, The Museum of the Etruscan civilization. There are a number of exhibits of Etruscan and Roman artifacts.

This is a cutaway of a container used to raise dormice. They were stuffed and served as a delicacy.
