Palermo

Palermo is a delightful city to use as a home base to see Sicily. There are a number of excellent restaurants, two magnificent theaters and a grand palace to see. From here it is easy to visit the amazing Greek temples at Agrigento, Mt. Etna, and my favorite, the beach town of Cefalù.

Teatro Politeama

Of the two theaters in Palermo, the Teatro Politeama, hosted performances of more popular events, such as operetta, festivals and equestrian shows. The theater sits on a beautiful square and is crowned with a magnificent quadriga.

The Teatro Massimo

The Teatro Massimo is the larger and more elegant of the two theaters. It was dedicated to King Victor Emanuel II and is the largest in Italy. It hosted more prestigious events than the lesser Teatro Politeama. The theater was also used for scenes in the movie Godfather III. Internal shots were in the kings box and the final climatic external scene was set on the front staircase.
